Short guide to Argentinian Spanish

galeria

You’ve just arrived in Buenos Aires, proud of your Spanish classes and your holidays in Spain, but you are lost between the pronunciation of the "ll" and "y", the "vos" and all of those new words you have never heard before? Don't worry, even Spanish speakers are destabilized by this Rioplatense Spanish!

First of all, you must know that here, the second person of the singular is different. "Tú puedes" becomes "vos podés", "dime" becomes "decíme", "haz" becomes "hacé" etc. Besides, forget the "vosotros"! Here, as in all of Latin America, only "ustedes" is used to refer to several people, whether they are friends or strangers.

If there are any expressions that characterize Argentines, it is Che and boludo. Che is mainly used to attract the attention of his interlocutor. A synonym could be "by the way". Boludo, on the other hand, is regularly used among friends to call each other, a bit like "dude" or "guy". Nevertheless, its primary meaning is "idiot", so don't tell someone you don't know. If you want to insult the taxista who almost crashed you, "pelotudo" is a good option too.

Another particularity that you will often hear : the “re” is used to express insistence and to amplify. For example : estás re linda.

I guess some words also surprised you, for example the word "arribo" when you arrived at the airport. So here's a little dictionary so you can see more clearly what this is about.
